What it solves

The gap

Shared and clicked links carry tracking tags such as utm_source, fbclid and gclid that tell the next site where you came from and make copied links long and noisy.

What it is

Linkrinse rewrites a link just before a click follows it, skips known redirect pages, cleans the address bar when a page opens and copies clean links from the popup, the right-click menu or a shortcut, using rules you can read and edit.

How you use it

Shorter, cleaner links to share and fewer tracking tags passed between sites, with rules you can see and change and nothing sent anywhere.

For developers and careful readers who want clean links without a heavy privacy suite, Linkrinse does one job with a transparent, editable rule list and no network access.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • Pasting product, article or video links into chats, tickets and documentation without campaign tags
  • Following links from newsletters and social feeds without passing on click identifiers
  • Keeping bookmarks and copied addresses short and readable

Built for

  • Developers, writers and support staff who share many links every day
  • People who want fewer tracking tags without installing a large privacy add-on

What is inside

What gets cleaned

Out of the box Linkrinse removes every utm_* campaign tag, click identifiers added by advertising networks such as fbclid, gclid, msclkid and ttclid, e-mail platform tags such as mc_eid and _hsenc, share ids such as igshid, and five tags that only matter on specific sites, for example ref_src on x.com. Ten redirect rules send links through google.com/url, youtube.com/redirect, l.facebook.com and similar pages straight to their destination.

When it cleans

A link is rewritten just before a left or middle click follows it, so the next site never receives the tags or the detour through a redirect page. When a page opens with tags in its address, the address bar is replaced without a reload; that page has already received the original address, but anything you copy or bookmark afterwards is clean. Copy clean link works on demand from the popup, the right-click menu and the Alt+Shift+C shortcut.

Rules you control

The rule list is plain text on the settings page: one name per line, * as a wildcard, # for comments and @ followed by sites to limit a rule. Mistakes are listed with their line number and ignored rather than breaking the list. A link tester shows the cleaned result and the removed names, and Restore default rules brings back the shipped list.

Private and local

Linkrinse has no server, downloads no rule updates and sends nothing anywhere. Settings and the cleaned-links counter live in the browser's local extension storage. A paused site and its subdomains are never touched automatically, and the popup pauses or resumes the current site with one click.

Questions

A browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that removes tracking parameters such as utm_source, fbclid and gclid from links and skips redirect pages, when you click a link, when a page opens and when you copy a link.

Google Chrome 116 or newer, or Mozilla Firefox 140 or newer. Chrome loads it once through Developer mode and keeps it. The Firefox build is not signed by Mozilla, so release Firefox loads it as a temporary add-on that is removed when Firefox closes; Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it.

It does not rewrite links that a page opens through its own scripts, cannot stop the first request of a page you open from an outside app, and skips redirect pages only for the sites in its redirect rules, which you can extend. There is no Safari or Edge store build and no store listing.

The rules engine and the content, background, popup and settings scripts are plain JavaScript, checked with 36 Node tests that run the real scripts against a simulated browser. Scripted runs then loaded the built extension, unzipped from the download into a fresh folder, in headless Chrome 155 and confirmed click, address-bar and redirect cleaning against a local test server, and confirmed click and address-bar cleaning in Firefox 155. Created with AI assistance; link, address-bar and redirect cleaning were tested by PN Scripts with 36 automated tests and scripted runs in headless Chrome 155 and Firefox 155.
