Service cards for the Laravel and Node.js stacks with images, commands, localhost ports and the start order from depends_on

What it solves

The gap

Every project reinvents its Docker setup: containers that create root-owned files, services that start before the database is ready, ports open on every interface, unpinned images that change under you and a page of docker compose commands nobody remembers.

What it is

Keelstart gives Laravel and Node.js projects a tested local stack with health-ordered start-up, files owned by the developer, localhost-only ports, pinned images and one short command for everything, plus production images built from the same Dockerfile.

How you use it

Copy the files, run two commands and the whole team works in the same stack, without writing or debugging Compose files.

For developers and small teams who build Laravel or Node.js apps, Keelstart is a ready, readable Docker setup that works on day one and stays in the project's own repository.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • Moving an existing Laravel project from a local PHP install to Docker
  • Giving a team or a freelancer the same Node.js and PostgreSQL stack in minutes
  • Building production-like images in CI from the same Dockerfile as development

Built for

  • Laravel and Node.js developers and small teams
  • Agencies and freelancers who hand projects between developers

What is inside

Two complete stacks

Laravel gets PHP-FPM 8.4, nginx, MySQL 8.4, Redis 7.4, Mailpit, a queue worker, the scheduler and Vite. Node.js gets Node 24 with live sync, PostgreSQL 18, Redis 7.4 and Mailpit. Each comes with a Dockerfile that has development and production targets.

Comfortable in development

Files belong to your own user, Xdebug and the Node inspector are one command away, Mailpit catches every email, and Vite hot reload reaches the browser. Services start only when the ones they need are healthy, so the first request does not fail on a database that is still starting.

One command

./slip init prepares .env, ./slip up starts everything and waits for health, and ./slip artisan, composer, npm, test, mysql, psql, redis, logs and sh run in the right container, or in a one-off container when the stack is down.

Production images from the same files

prod:build bakes the code, production dependencies and the Vite build into images that run as non-root users, and prod:up starts a production-like stack with secrets from .env, no source mounts and health checks, for CI, staging or a final test.

Questions

A set of Docker Compose starter templates for Laravel and Node.js development, each with a production image, a ./slip command for daily work, documented settings and a test suite.

Docker Engine with the Compose plugin 2.24 or newer, or Docker Desktop; bash for ./slip (WSL 2 on Windows). Laravel 11 to 13, or a Node.js 22+ project with a package.json.

It does not set up a production server: no TLS, backups, monitoring or host hardening. The images were not built and the stacks were not started with Docker during testing; the configurations were checked by Compose, hadolint, nginx and php-fpm.

The templates are plain Compose files, Dockerfiles, shell scripts and configuration files. A Python test suite renders every compose file with Docker Compose, lints the Dockerfiles, runs the nginx site and php-fpm pool natively, and runs the slip scripts and entrypoint against fake docker and php commands. Created with AI assistance; the templates were checked by PN Scripts with that test suite.
