The Latinka settings page: for one Bulgarian sentence, Drupal core writes SHCHastlivi khora v Blgariya, Latinka writes Shtastlivi hora v Bulgaria

What it solves

The gap

Drupal turns Bulgarian titles into addresses such as /shchastlivi-khora-v-blgariya, spelled by Russian rules and not by the Bulgarian Transliteration Act, and sites that kept Cyrillic aliases end up with long percent-encoded links.

What it is

Latinka decorates core's transliteration service with the Bulgarian rules, so every part of Drupal that transliterates follows them, and converts existing Cyrillic aliases with a dry run and 301 redirects.

How you use it

Clean, correctly spelled Latin addresses for Bulgarian content, without breaking a single old link.

The Bulgarian Transliteration Act for Drupal's addresses, machine names and file names, with a safe way to fix the aliases a site already has.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • A Bulgarian company site on Drupal whose news aliases should read /novini/shtastlivi-klienti-v-sofia
  • A site migrated from another CMS with hundreds of Cyrillic aliases that must keep their search rankings
  • An agency that builds Drupal sites for Bulgarian clients and wants machine names like novini_i_sabitiya

Built for

  • Owners and editors of Drupal sites with Bulgarian content
  • Drupal developers and agencies working for Bulgarian clients

What is inside

The law's spelling, everywhere

Latinka decorates core's transliteration service, which Pathauto, the machine name fields of the admin UI and core's file name transliteration all call. Each of them now writes щ as sht, ъ as a and a final ия as ia, and the state name as Bulgaria.

Convert what you already have

The Convert existing aliases page lists every alias with a Cyrillic letter and the Latin alias it becomes, with a number added when another page already uses it. Click Convert and it runs in batches of 50; run it again and converted aliases are skipped.

No broken links

With the Redirect module, every old alias gets a 301 redirect entity you can edit under URL redirects. Without it, Latinka keeps the old aliases and answers them with a 301 only when Drupal would return 404, so normal pages cost nothing. The page cache is cleared after a conversion.

Your rules

Choose every content language or only the ones you select, the default alphabet, whether Russian and Ukrainian words are recognised, and exceptions such as Пловдив|Plovdiv City. Drush has latinka, latinka:status and latinka:convert with --dry-run.

Questions

A Drupal module that writes Bulgarian Cyrillic in Latin by the Bulgarian Transliteration Act in URL aliases, machine names and uploaded file names, and converts existing Cyrillic aliases with 301 redirects. It comes as a zip with the module, its tests, a Bulgarian translation and a README.

Drupal 10.3 or 11 with PHP 8.1 or newer. Pathauto is needed for automatic aliases and the Redirect module is used when installed; both are optional. It was tested on Drupal 11.4.10 with Pathauto 1.15, Redirect 1.13 and Drush 13.8 on PHP 8.4, with SQLite.

It does not translate text, rename files already on disk or change links written by hand inside content. Drupal 10.3 and MySQL or PostgreSQL were not part of the tests, and aliases that Pathauto already wrote in Latin by core's rules are regenerated with Pathauto's own bulk update, not by the converter.

Made by PN Scripts, a studio that builds games and tools, as a service decorator, a letter override hook for machine names and an alias converter with a 404 subscriber. Created with AI assistance; the module was checked by PN Scripts with 97 PHPUnit tests (unit and Drupal kernel tests with Pathauto and Redirect) and a scripted install from the zip on a fresh Drupal 11.4 site, including HTTP checks of the 301 redirects.
