Nine example devices with board, packages, entities and a valid result

What it solves

The gap

ESPHome configurations get copied from forum posts, differ from device to device and break quietly when two packages share an option name.

What it is

One documented package per board, bus, sensor and actuator, examples that validate cleanly, and tests that keep the packages from overwriting each other.

How you use it

A new device is a list of packages and a few pins, with security and diagnostics already in place.

For people who build ESPHome devices for their own home or for clients and want tidy, reusable configurations.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • Heating water on the night tariff
  • Room climate, CO2 and presence sensors
  • Lights, shutters and a garage door with local control

Built for

  • Home Assistant and ESPHome users who build their own devices
  • Installers who build devices for clients

What is inside

One file per job

Core, boards, buses, sensors and actuators each live in one documented file. A device file lists the packages it needs and sets a few pins; the board package supplies the rest.

Secure and observable by default

The encrypted API and encrypted OTA with one key, a fallback hotspot, a password on the web page, time from Home Assistant with SNTP as a fallback, and uptime, Wi-Fi signal, IP address and version on every device.

Hot water at the night price

The water heater package follows Home Assistant's night tariff sensor and falls back to its own clock with the Bulgarian zones, keeps the temperature between target and restart point, cuts off on a broken probe or above 80 °C, and estimates its energy.

Tested

Every example device validates with ESPHome 2026.9.1 without warnings beyond strapping-pin notes. The water heater logic runs as a Linux build driven through the native API, and the tests check that no two packages share an option name.

Questions

A set of 27 ESPHome YAML packages with nine example devices, including a water heater controller for the night tariff.

ESPHome 2026.9 or newer, an ESP32 or ESP8266 board and the sensors or relays you use; Home Assistant is optional for the water heater.

No hardware and no flashed firmware: no firmware was compiled for or flashed to a real board, and no sensor was connected. Mains wiring must be done by a qualified person.

Written as ESPHome YAML with lambdas where needed, and tested with pytest. Created with AI assistance; the configurations and the water heater logic were checked by PN Scripts with 44 automated tests, including ESPHome validation of every example and a compiled run of the logic.
