The gap
City builders need needs, coverage and a budget that interact clearly, or the player cannot tell why the town will not grow.
Game templates
The complete source of Gablewend, a small city builder with growing zones, water, jobs, goods, happiness, land value, a monthly budget and bankruptcy. A headless smoke test proves keyboard and touch input and lets the built-in bot build a town of 1000.

The gap
City builders need needs, coverage and a budget that interact clearly, or the player cannot tell why the town will not grow.
What it is
This template gives a small, tuned simulation with visible causes: overlays, demand bars and an advice line that point at the one blocking need.
How you use it
Unzip, serve the folder and open index.html, then edit game.js; npm test plays it again in headless Chrome.
Source code of a real, playable game to reskin and learn from, with a smoke test whose bot plays it.
Use it when
Built for
After every change the game finds the roads joined to the highway, spreads well, park, market and school coverage, and computes land value and happiness for each tile.
A few zones a tick move one step toward their target level; at each month's end taxes and upkeep settle the treasury and debt counts toward bankruptcy.
Plain JavaScript and Canvas 2D; open index.html through any static server and edit game.js.
A headless Chrome test loads the game, checks the console, presses keys and taps, and lets the built-in bot play a run to its result screen.
