Inside a level built by Retro Level Builder with the Emberhold textures: stone walls, flagstone floor and a pool of glowing coals under a dusk sky

What it solves

The gap

Blocking out a retro level by hand means modelling every wall, keeping the texture scale right on every face, and building collision in the engine afterwards.

What it is

Paint cells on a grid and let the add-on build the floors, walls, pools, props and a ready collision mesh, textured with your retro textures and exported for Godot or Unity.

How you use it

New Level Grid, paint, Build Level, Godot .glb: four clicks from an idea to a level you can walk in.

A small tool for one job: grid levels with textures and collision, straight into a game engine.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • Blocking out and texturing retro dungeon, station or market levels.
  • Making playable PSX-style levels for Godot quickly.
  • Trying out PN Retro Textures packs in a real level.

Built for

  • Indie game developers who make retro and PSX-style 3D games.
  • Blender users who build levels for Godot or Unity.

What it does

Paint a grid

New Level Grid adds a plane of cells. Select cells in Edit Mode and paint them as floor, path, wall, liquid or prop from the Retro Level tab of the sidebar.

Build the level

Floors, a second floor texture for paths, walls only where an open cell meets a wall or the outside, sunken pools with rims, prop blocks and an optional ceiling. Press Build again after any change.

Retro textures, set up

Point it at a PN Retro Textures pack and it proposes a texture for each slot, with nearest filtering and normal maps. Any folder of tileable images works too.

Collision and export

A "-colonly" collision mesh comes with every build; Godot turns it into a StaticBody3D. Export .glb for Godot or .fbx for Unity with the textures embedded.

Questions

No. It reads PN Retro Textures packs and proposes textures from them, but any folder of tileable PNG or JPG images works, and with no folder the level gets plain colours.

Each build writes a second mesh, "<grid> Mesh-colonly": floors, walls, props and a lid over pools. Godot imports it as a StaticBody3D and does not draw it. In Unity, add a Mesh Collider to it.

One storey per grid (stack grids for more), full-height walls with doors as gaps. Tested on Blender 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 on Linux and Godot 4.7.1; Blender 4.2 to 5.1, Windows, macOS and Unity were not tested.

Built with the help of an AI coding assistant; checked by PN Scripts with automated tests in Blender. Images are renders of the add-on's demo layout with PN Retro Textures; no AI-generated imagery.
