A memory card's folders before and the library after podredi sort with month names in Bulgarian, with the summary of the run

What it solves

The gap

Photos pile up from cameras, phones and messengers in folders named DCIM, Camera and New folder, with copies of the same pictures in several places, and sorting them by hand takes evenings while photo apps lock the library into their own format.

What it is

Podredi reads the date each photo or video was really taken and copies or moves it into plain dated folders on your own disk, skipping what you already have, with a dry run first and an undo after.

How you use it

Years of photos in dated folders in minutes, without doubles and with a way back.

A careful, scriptable photo sorter for people who keep their pictures in folders, not in a cloud service or a catalogue.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • A family emptying a phone and two memory cards into one photo library by year and month
  • A photographer filing each shoot by camera and date with files renamed by time
  • Someone tidying years of WhatsApp and Viber pictures without creating doubles

Built for

  • People who keep their photos and videos in folders on a computer or a NAS
  • Photographers and IT helpers who sort cards and backups for others

What is inside

The day it was taken

EXIF dates and camera models from JPEG, HEIC, PNG, WebP, TIFF and raw photos, the creation time in MP4 and MOV videos with your time zone, dates in names such as IMG_20240315 or VID-20240315-WA0001, and the file's own time only as the last resort.

Folders the way you want

Year and month by default, or any pattern with day, month names in English or Bulgarian, camera model and photos or videos, and file names by date and time. A typo in a pattern stops the run before anything moves, and names stay valid on Windows.

No doubles, no overwrites

Every file is compared by content with the library and with this run, so copies from messengers and cards sorted twice are skipped. A different photo with the same name gets a number. Hidden folders, thumbnails and the library itself are left alone.

Look first, undo after

A dry run lists the folders it would fill. Copying is the default and moving checks each copy first. Every sort writes a journal, and podredi undo puts moved files back and removes copies, after checking nothing was edited since.

Questions

A command line program that sorts photos and videos into dated folders by the day they were taken, with duplicate detection, a dry run and undo. It comes as a zip with the Linux and Windows programs, the source code and a README with examples.

Linux x86_64 with glibc 2.34 or newer, or Windows 10 or 11 x86_64; nothing to install. On a Mac you build it from the included source with Rust. It was tested on Ubuntu 24.04 with real photo and video files, and the Windows program under Wine.

A graphical interface, face or place sorting, editing dates and writing EXIF. CR3, RAF and AVI files fall back to the date in the name or the file time. It was not run on a real Windows PC or a Mac during development.

Made by PN Scripts, a Sofia studio that builds games and tools, in Rust with small open source libraries for EXIF, the command line and hashing, whose notices are included. Created with AI assistance; the code was written for this program and checked by PN Scripts with 8 automated tests and a buyer's run of the Linux and Windows programs on real photo and video files.
