The Node-RED editor with the appliance cycle node, a replayed wash and English and Bulgarian notifications in the debug sidebar

What it solves

The gap

Washing machines in a cellar, dishwashers that finish quietly and dryers that tumble for an hour after the end leave laundry waiting, and simple power rules in automations end cycles during a soak or never end them at all.

What it is

Zvanche reads the plug's power, finds the real start and end of each cycle through pauses and anti-crease tumbling, and sends a clear message, with the ready time, energy, cost and reminders until the machine is emptied.

How you use it

No more forgotten wet laundry, and a clear record of what each wash costs.

A dependable appliance cycle node for Node-RED users who already have a smart plug and want messages they can trust, in English or Bulgarian.

Who it is for

Use it when

  • A washing machine in the cellar or the bathroom that sends a Telegram message when it is done
  • A dishwasher on a night tariff whose cost per cycle is recorded
  • A shared laundry room where reminders go out until the machine is emptied

Built for

  • Home automation users with Node-RED and a smart plug or energy meter
  • Installers who set up Node-RED and Home Assistant for clients

What is inside

Finished means finished

A cycle starts when the power stays above the start threshold and ends when it stays low for the end time. Soaking and draining do not end it, short dips do not stop a start, and a dryer's anti-crease tumbling after the end is ignored. Plugs that report only on change are covered by the node's own clock.

Ready around 10:36

The node remembers the last ten cycles, per programme if you send one, and its start message says how long a wash usually takes and when it will be ready. While it runs, the state output and the status line in the editor show progress and the time left.

What each wash costs

Energy is counted from the real readings and the cost follows your price per kWh, which you can change at any moment, for example from a day and night tariff. Each finished cycle reports its duration, kWh, cost and peak power, and totals are kept.

Messages in two languages

The third output is a sentence ready for Telegram, e-mail or Home Assistant, in English or Bulgarian: started, finished and still waiting. Reminders repeat until you send emptied from a button or a door sensor, or the next cycle starts.

Questions

A Node-RED node that detects when a washing machine, dishwasher, dryer or other appliance starts and finishes from its power reading, learns how long cycles take, counts energy and cost, reminds you until it is emptied and writes notifications in English and Bulgarian. It comes as an npm package with two example flows.

Node-RED 3 or newer on Node.js 18 or newer, and a smart plug or energy meter whose power reading reaches Node-RED, for example through MQTT or Home Assistant. It was tested with Node-RED 5.0.8 on Node.js 22 on Linux.

The plug, a dashboard, recognising the programme from the power curve, and the notification nodes themselves; use the Telegram, e-mail or Home Assistant nodes you already have. It was tested on made-up but realistic power traces, not with a physical plug, so watch the first cycles and adjust the thresholds if needed.

Made by PN Scripts, a studio that builds games and tools, in plain JavaScript for the Node-RED runtime, tested with the Node.js test runner and the Node-RED test helper. Created with AI assistance; the code was written for this node and checked by PN Scripts with 30 automated tests, including runs inside a real Node-RED and a buyer install from the release zip.
